Mahagalkadawala Water Project

We are deeply excited to announce the completion our first charitable event in collaboration with Paramee Dam Aramudala and Nil Diya Dahara to construct and maintain a water filtration system in the village of Mahagalkadawala in Sri Lanka! In addition to the water filtration system, we were also able to provide school supplies and dry rations to further support the residents of the village. This event comes as the result of months of fundraising, having raised 1,019,659.8 LKR, or $3029.28. This will provide clean water to about 100 families, 20% of which are impacted by CKDu. The opening ceremony was recorded, and will be aired on the Buddhist Media Network in August. Thank you to everyone who donated.

WHY WATER FILTRATION?

Although the cause of CKDu is uncertain (hence the name) and heavily debated, a growing body of research suggests that long term consumption of hard water may contribute to the disease (Imbulana et al., Uthayarajan et al., Hettithanthri et al.) Many villages in Sri Lanka, especially in the dry zone, lack access to clean water and are thus forced to drink well water.

In order to help eliminate the effects of this well water, CKDu Awareness aims to construct and maintain water filtration systems like this one. While no single intervention can completely eliminate CKDu, improving access to clean water is widely regarded as one of the most important public health strategies for reducing potential environmental exposures and protecting kidney health in affected communities.
